PLAYLIST – Top 10 of 2015 – #10 – ‘Generate’ by Eric Prydz

generate eric prydzEric Sheridan Prydz ( born 19 July 1976), also known by his stage names Pryda and Cirez D, is a Swedish DJ and producer based in Los Angeles, California.

Prydz was perhaps best known for his 2004 hit single “Call on Me”, at that time, which sampled the Steve Winwood hit “Valerie”. It topped the UK singles charts for five weeks and was also number one on the German Top 100 for six consecutive weeks. Although this track made him immensely popular, Eric has stopped playing it in his shows in an attempt to distance himself from the track. In some respects he has succeeded, and with his newer songs, Eric has gained recognition from both underground and mainstream fans. In 2006, he released a remixed version of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2”, entitled “Proper Education”, with a video.

On 21 May 2012, Prydz released his debut artist album as a 3 disc set through Virgin Records. Disc 1 is made up of new unreleased Pryda productions, which some fans may have heard as works in progress (including Shadows, Agag, Mighty Love, Allein and the intro edit of Pjanoo). Discs 2 and 3 bring together many of the classic tracks from the Pryda catalogue, sequenced and mixed by the man himself, including some of his special re-edits.

The Ministry of Sound club in London hosted the launch of the ‘Eric Prydz Presents Pryda’ album on 14 April 2012, where Eric played some of the tracks from the album.

Inserting the CD in a computer and visiting Eric Prydz’ Facebook page provides access to a download of ‘Tijuana’, a track previously known as ‘Space Miami ID’ in .WAV format.

His 2013 essential mix was named Essential Mix of the Year by Pete Tong.[citation needed]

Eric Prydz’ “Pryda Snare” (contained in his song Miami To Atlanta) is a popular technique in house and trance music consisting of using a compressed and sustained snare sample at the end of a bar. Commonly used to mark progressions in a song structure, many consider it to be one of the most sampled sounds in the electronic dance music world, especially in the Beatport Top 100, which is notably used by producers such as Martin Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and W&W.

2014 was the 10th year of Prydz’s label Pryda Recordings, and as a result, on 9 January 2014, Prydz announced a special upcoming artist album which was initially due for release later that year. On 4 May 2015, Prydz announced PR(10)DA, a collection of unreleased tracks from January 2004 to December 2014. It will be released over three EPs, leading up to an album to be released in October 2015.

On 19 May 2014, Prydz announced via social media the third installment of his concert, Eric Prydz In Concert, titled EPIC 3.0. Promising the ‘world’s largest indoor hologram’, new music, and new visuals, the show was to be held at Madison Square Garden during the Fall. Prydz performed his EPIC 3.0 show on 27 September 2014, playing a large range of new and unreleased material. The show incorporated a 20m, 4K hologram, and 32 lasers.

On 4 July 2015 Prydz was the first DJ with a set featured as a “One Mix” on Beats 1, the worldwide radio station on Apple Music.

PLAYLIST – Most Played 2014 – #1 – ‘Nobody To Love’ by Sigma

sigma nobody to loveSigma (Σ) is a British drum and bass duo consisting of Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie. They met at Leeds University at drum and bass nights. Their 2010 collaboration with DJ Fresh “Lassitude” peaked at number 98 on the UK Singles Chart. Their single “Nobody to Love”, a rework of Kanye West’s “Bound 2”, was released on 6 April 2014. It topped the UK Singles Chart, becoming not only their first top 40 single but also their first UK number one.

Lenzie and Edwards met in 2006 at Leeds University; Cameron was working in local record store Tribe Records and with Echo Location’s Obi running local night Event Horizon, while Lenzie was DJing hip-hop and warming up Event Horizon for such acts as Rahzel and Grandmaster Flash. Once they had finished in Leeds, they relocated to London and became a three-piece with Edwards’ school friend Ben Mauerhoff, being signed under DJ Fresh’s Breakbeat Kaos. After a while, long distances took their toll – Edwards and Mauerhoff were based in Surrey, whereas Lenzie was based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire and they couldn’t get three people into the Harpenden studio – and Mauerhoff left. In December 2008 they formed their own record label, Life Recordings (so called because, according to Lenzie, the industry demanded that it be their life). Its inaugural release was a VIP mix of their early Bingo Beats single “El Presidente”.

Sigma has produced music for the Hospital Records label. In June 2009 they made the song “Paint It Black” for the compilation album Sick Music. Later that year came their second Life Recordings release “Nexus” / “Front to Back”. In 2010, the duo released their two-part Stand Tall E.P. on the influential drum and bass label, Breakbeat Kaos. In December 2010, Sigma and DJ Fresh released the single “Lassitude” featuring Koko as the fifth and final single from Fresh’s album Kryptonite. The song became one of their first charting singles as it peaked at number 98 on the UK Singles Chart and number 11 on the UK Dance Chart. After the release of their late-2011 Night & Day EPs on their label, Sigma began touring internationally in 2012. They toured the UK, Europe, Australasia & the USA. They were the supporting act for DJ Fresh on his first live UK tour. The tour included dates supporting fellow former Leeds student Christopher Mercer (a.k.a. Rusko).

The duo signed to 3Beat Records in the summer of 2013. They had also remixed tracks for the likes of Ellie Goulding, Eric Prydz, Groove Armada, Skepta and Sway. Following their remix of the Stylo G single “Soundbwoy”, they released their debut single with 3Beat, “Summer Calling”, featuring Taylor Fowlis. Their second single with 3Beat, “Rudeboy”, featuring Doctor, was released in December 2013. The song peaked at number 56 on the UK Singles Chart and number 12 on the UK Dance Chart. They released their third single with 3Beat, “Nobody to Love”, on 6 April 2014. It topped the UK Singles Chart upon release.
