GIG – Huntar at The Joiners – Tuesday 26th September 2017

huntarBlending percussive electro-pop and smooth, yearning vocals, HUNTAR is the performance alias of a British musician who’s made an effort to remain anonymous.

His first single, early-2014’s “Expectations,” showcased his soulful delivery alongside layered vocal samples. Good Soldier released his debut EP, Bitter, in December 2014. As he began to win praise from outlets like BBC Radio 1 in England and KCRW in the U.S., he followed up in 2015 with singles including “Skin” and “The Hunger.”

A native Londoner, HUNTAR began performing live on a regular basis in late 2015, with dozens of shows across England in 2016. That year also brought new songs such as “Anyway” and “4AM,” with the latter landing him on Billboard’s emerging artists chart.

Home of acts including Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, and Chvrches, Glassnote Records repackaged his five-track debut as BITTAR in 2016, with one song swapped out for “Hold On.” HUNTAR opened 2017 with the anthemic single “Echo,” also on Glassnote.

GIG – Avec Sans at The Railway Inn – Friday 7th April 2017

avec-sansAvec Sans is a London-based electro-pop group signed to American indie label Beverly Martel. The band is made up of Alice Fox (vocals, producer) and Jack St. James (electronics, producer).

The name Avec Sans is taken from French, meaning: with without.

Avec Sans are Alice Fox and Jack St James from Manchester and Trinidad respectively.

Avec Sans started performing live in 2013. They quickly gained recognition for their energetic live shows, which involve hacked Novation launchpads used in tandem tilted towards the audience. Jack has filmed performances using 16 launchpads at once and has helped Novation demo and launch new products online.

Press supporters include The Guardian, who said of their music: “it’s a sophisticated slice of delicate synthpop with more interesting production touches and melodic hooks than most bands can muster in a career.” Other press support for Avec Sans has also come from publications including: Music Week, Clash,  VH1, Noisey, MTV Iggy, PRS for Music M Magazine, Fred Perry Subculture, Artrocker, Digital Spy, Pop Justice, Elle Magazine, Hunger TV,  Notion, Wonderland and Tidal (service) who featured them on their electronic music playlist for September 2015.

Heartbreak Hi was listed in The Times Essential Tracks feature in April 2016 alongside the latest releases from Bjork, Underworld and White Denim and was described as “marvellously bittersweet electro-pop”. In the 10 June 2016 edition, the NME called Avec Sans “a cut above your average duo… right on the sweet spot between hazy ’80s Nostalgia and 21st century introspection.”

GIG – Kyko at The Joiners -Wednesday 29th March 2017

kykoHe’s one of the whizz kids we’re happy to have found on the internet. Singer songwriter and multi-instruments player, Scott AKA Kyko is slowly rising up and full of potential. Perfect timing to fill your summer playlist with some fresh indie pop music!
He has been into music for a while and knows all about it. Fan of 80’s stuff and also new upcoming artists, he is open to the world’s musical trends.
After gaining experience through cover bands, Kyko decided to focus on a solo project and started writing songs on his own. He builds it all at home on his laptop and it’s all happening in his head: chords, drums, guitars, lyrics.
He creates everything on his own and I personally really like his music. There are nice guitar riffs and a hint of electronic sounds with interesting percussions. Imagine waking up to a sunny day and stretching up to “Animals” while the rays softly pierces the curtains. Both swinging rhythm and dreamy lyrics will put you in the most happy and ambitious mood. Drums and choirs may remind you of Bastille.
On the other hand, “Headlight” sounds more poppy and still pretty indie. Sadly, those two tracks are the only songs available on the internet. But he has been playing a few other songs during his live sets and his first EP will be out on July 17th, which means we are ever gonna be able to enjoy more from the young artist.
By the way, if you find yourself at one of his gigs, you’ll be facing a true artist. With a band by his side, Kyko gives away groovy vibes, knows how to make his crowd sing and hits every note effortlessly.

GIG – Declan McKenna at The Wedgewood Rooms -Wednesday 22nd March 2017

declan-mckennaDeclan Benedict McKenna (born 24 December 1998) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician best known for winning the Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition in 2015. McKenna’s first single, the self-released “Brazil”, reached number one on Sirius XM Radio’s Alt Nation Alt 18 Countdown for 23 January 2016, and stayed there for three weeks. The song reached number 16 on the Alternative Songs chart.

McKenna writes his own songs and usually performs all his own instruments.

BBC News called “Brazil” an extraordinarily mature song for a 16-year-old songwriter.

Matt Wilkinson at NME called it “one of the best songs” of 2015, and had high praise for McKenna’s second single, “Paracetamol”, as well. Jon Lyons of ThisNewBand.com called “Brazil” “a catchy song no doubt”, and also noted that it was “a sharp critique on sports, money and power.”

Some music critics have tempered their praise of McKenna. Critic Matt Wilkinson called McKenna’s London gigs surprisingly good, if “rough around the edges”. Jon Lyons has observed that as of November 2015, McKenna’s songs seemed to indicate an artist still experimenting with bands and styles of music which have influenced him. He felt McKenna was still “searching for his own sound right in front of the crowd. An artist is being born note by note.” Andy Welch, music critic for The Bristol Post, said McKenna was “one to watch” displaying “lots of early, ragged promise”.

GIG – Nathan Grisdale at The Joiners -Thursday 16th March 2017

nathan-grisdaleManchester-based singer/songwriter Nathan Grisdale began his musical project following a string of requests from his large online fan base.

His passion was initially born out of a desire to help other people, and he built up his online presence with videos that attempted to discuss and remedy his follower’s worries and fears.

These videos were soon turned into songs, and Grisdale took the challenge of taking on intimate and challenging subjects and turning them into cathartic, meaningful tracks.

His soulful voice is often backed by sparse and simple melodies, and his single, “Only One,” reached the U.K. Top 100 singles chart.

GIG – The Lottery Winners at The Joiners – Sunday 25th September 2016

lottery winnersLottery Winners is a four member indie pop band from Leigh, Greater Manchester.

The band was formed by Thom Rylance (Vocals/Guitar), Robert Lally (Guitar/Vocals), Katie Lloyd (Bass/Vocals), and Joe Singleton (Drums).

In 2016, they were signed by music mogul Seymour Stein, the man responsible for Madonna, The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Smiths and many others.

Lottery Winners started based on Thom and Robert’s friendship as they both shared a passion for music, could play guitar and sing. But neither knew anyone with a bass, until a few seconds after their ‘Bassist Wanted’ poster was placed on the notice board of Heybrook Music, Leigh’s only guitar shop.

The 15 year old Katie Lloyd just happened to be in there at that time on that day. The band was completed when Joe Singleton received a phone call from Katie, high-school best friend, insisting that he to should join the band. After many declinations, he agreed.
